Isaias’s remnants dumped up to 8 inches of rain on Watauga and Ashe counties over 24 hours, with Taterhill reporting 8.19 inches, Seven Devils 8.06, Obids 8.10 and Boone 7.60, and wind gusts reached 60 mph at Taterhill and Banner Elk on Saturday, according to the National Weather Service. N.C. 194 at Broadstone Road in Valle Crucis closed Sunday morning because of flooding. Now the High Country is drying out: lingering upslope showers end by late this morning, then it stays dry through most of the week with above-normal temperatures through midweek. Another front could bring mountain rain chances between Thursday and Saturday, with temperatures dropping below normal next weekend. Do not drive on flooded roads.
Robert “Zane” Tester, who served as Boone’s police chief from 1986 to 1998 and then pastored full time, died Thursday, Oct. 8, at Watauga Medical Center at age 80. The Boone Police Department called him “one of the men who helped shape the history, traditions and culture of the department.” Services are Tuesday, Oct. 13, at 3 p.m. at Cornerstone Missionary Baptist Church, 169 Cornerstone Ln., Deep Gap, with visitation from 1 to 3 p.m. Graveside services follow at Westview Cemetery.
Old Dominion beat App State 10-3 Saturday at Kidd Brewer Stadium in a defensive game shaped by heavy rain and wind from Isaias’s remnants, with 27,011 in attendance. ODU’s first points came on a 34-yard field goal in the third quarter, and a safety after a botched snap cut the lead to 3-2 before Maurki James scored on a third-and-goal run and a two-point pass made it 10-3. App State fell to 3-2 overall and 0-1 in the Sun Belt. The Mountaineers play at Coastal Carolina on Friday in a nationally televised game.
