Snow returned to the High Country’s highest elevations Saturday, Oct. 17, with the first flakes of the season falling along the Blue Ridge Parkway and on Mt. Mitchell, the highest peak east of the Mississippi River at 6,684 feet. The snow showed up alongside peak fall color. Video from Andrea Crouch shows snow falling along the Parkway, and the National Weather Service in Greenville-Spartanburg shared video from Mt. Mitchell showing “a good burst of snow.”
Wally, the winning woolly worm at this year’s Woolly Worm Festival in Banner Elk, is calling for a cold and snowy start to winter. Each segment of the worm’s coat stands for one week of winter. Wally’s first segment is black, which means below-average temperatures and snow in week 1. Weeks 2 and 3 are amber (average temperatures), week 4 is a fleck, a mix of colors that signals below-average temperatures with snow or frost, weeks 5 through 12 are all amber, and week 13 is another fleck for a chilly finish.
Watauga 35, Alexander Central 26: The Pioneers jumped out to a 21-0 lead after the first quarter, led 21-13 at the half and 28-19 heading into the fourth, then closed it out Friday night at Watauga High School to pick up back-to-back wins. Watauga improves to 3-5 overall and 2-1 in Northwestern 6A/7A Conference play, following the previous week’s 49-14 win at South Caldwell. The Pioneers hit the road Friday, Oct. 23, at McDowell at 7:30 p.m.
App State 35, Coastal Carolina 32: Facing a double-digit halftime deficit, the Mountaineers (4-2, 1-1 Sun Belt) used a dominant second half to win at Coastal Carolina. Jaquari Lewis became the third App State back to score four rushing touchdowns in a game during the program’s FBS era, and App State rushed for 253 yards as a team. A key interception by safety Devin Henderson set up the go-ahead drive.
