Hurricane Isaias has strengthened to 110 mph and is racing north-northeast toward the northern Gulf Coast, where a Hurricane Warning stretches from Ocean Springs, Miss., to the Bay/Gulf County line in Florida and a life-threatening storm surge is expected. The National Weather Service in Blacksburg says today stays dry and warm, with rain from Isaias’ remnants arriving late Saturday morning and lasting into Sunday morning. Most areas should see 1 to 2 inches, but upslope flow along the Blue Ridge could push totals to 2 to 4 inches, with higher localized amounts possible in northwest North Carolina, and a Flood Watch may be needed. The heaviest rain is expected late Saturday night into early Sunday morning.
App State’s two remaining October home games, Saturday’s Homecoming matchup with Old Dominion (1 p.m.) and the Oct. 22 Family Weekend game against James Madison (7 p.m., nationally televised), are sold out. Fans still needing tickets are directed to SeatGeek. Tickets remain for the Georgia State (Nov. 7) and ULM (Nov. 21) home games, starting at $50. Kids 3 and older need a ticket.
The Ashe County Sheriff’s Office’s sixth annual Rooftop Cops fundraiser raised a record of roughly $23,100 for Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. Deputies spent Tuesday, Sept. 29, on the roof of the Jefferson Bojangles, which donated all sales that day. More than $80,000 has been raised since the event began, and the money benefits the nonprofit Badges of Ashe, with 100% staying in the community.
