Rescuers were alerted just after 8 p.m., rewarmed the patient and used a Stokes basket to carry them across rugged terrain, reaching the parking lot around 10 p.m. Crews reminded backcountry hikers to have a plan, check the weather, pack extra clothing and stay together as nightfall nears.

The Federal Trade Commission and 20 states, including North Carolina, sued Dollar General on Monday, alleging the chain charged customers more at checkout than the prices shown on shelves, tags and ads. The FTC cites at least 29,265 “Did Not Honor Marked Price” complaints between January 2023 and March 2026. N.C. Attorney General Jeff Jackson’s office said state inspections at 10 stores found nearly 400 pricing inaccuracies, and the state fined 10 stores for charging more than the listed price.

A North Wilkesboro woman is charged with attempted first-degree murder after a 68-year-old man was shot in Wilkes County on Monday, according to the Wilkes County Sheriff’s Office. The man drove to the Wilkesboro Fire Department for help and was taken to Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, where his injuries are considered critical.
