App State hosts one of the last unbeaten teams in college football Thursday night when James Madison comes to a sold-out Kidd Brewer Stadium for a nationally televised game that opens Family Weekend. Kickoff between the Mountaineers (4-2, 1-1 Sun Belt) and the Dukes (7-0, 4-0) is set for 7 p.m. on ESPNU. James Madison is one of six unbeaten teams left in the FBS and is scoring 42.9 points per game, third-most in the country. The last time App State faced an unbeaten opponent this late in a season was Nov. 18, 2023, when the Mountaineers beat 18th-ranked James Madison 26-23 in overtime.

The N.C. Land and Water Fund has awarded grants for two Ashe County projects as part of more than $28 million announced statewide. The N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission receives $104,000 for the Price Tract to add to Three Top Mountain Game Land, and The Nature Conservancy receives $1,580,055 for the Autry Tract at Phoenix Mountain Preserve. Statewide, the grants will protect more than 10,000 acres, most of which will eventually be open to the public for hiking, hunting, fishing, boating, birding and other recreation. More High Country projects are provisionally funded.

The State Board of Elections reminds voters that election officials are the best source of accurate information about the voting process. If you are at a voting site and have a problem or question, talk to a poll worker, who can escalate it to the chief judge or the county board of elections if needed. In an emergency at a voting site, dial 911 and notify a poll worker. If you feel harassed or intimidated, notify an election official immediately; intimidating a voter is a crime.
