The National Weather Service in Blacksburg has issued a
Flash Flood Warning for…Northwestern Alleghany NC County in northwestern North Carolina…Ashe County in northwestern North Carolina…
Until 845 PM EDT.
At 618 PM EDT, Doppler radar and automated rain gauges indicatedthunderstorms producing heavy rain across the warned area. Between2 and 3.5 inches of rain have fallen. Additional rainfall amountsof 1 to 2 inches are possible in the warned area. Flash floodingis ongoing or expected to begin shortly.
HAZARD…Flash flooding caused by thunderstorms.
SOURCE…Radar and automated gauges.
IMPACT…Flash flooding of small creeks and streams, urbanareas, highways, streets and underpasses as well asother poor drainage and low-lying areas.
Some locations that will experience flash flooding include…Jefferson… West Jefferson…Lansing… Ashland…Mount Jefferson… Wagoner…Grassy Creek…
This includes the following streams and drainages…Big Horse Creek, Crab Fork, Little Helton Creek, Big Laurel Creek,Beaver Creek, Dog Creek, Little Horse Creek, Grassy Creek, LittleRiver, Little Phoenix Creek, Hoskin Fork, Helton Creek, JerdBranch, Call Creek and Elk Creek.
PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS…
Turn around, don't drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flooddeaths occur in vehicles.
Be aware of your surroundings and do not drive on flooded roads.
