The National Weather Service in Greenville-Spartanburg has issued a
Flash Flood Warning for…Avery County in western North Carolina…Caldwell County in western North Carolina…
Until 745 PM EST Tuesday.
At 1159 AM EST, Doppler radar indicated thunderstorms producingheavy rain across the warned area. Between 2 and 4 inches of rainhave fallen since early Tuesday morning. Additional rainfallamounts of 1 to 3 inches are possible in the warned area. Onsetflash flooding is developing and significant flash flooding isexpected to begin shortly. This will be a prolonged event withnew areas of flash flooding developing throughout the afternoonhours. Significant rises and adjacent flooding of Wilson Creek,Linville River, North Toe River, Johns River, Mulberry Creek,Buffalo Creek, Lower Creek, and the headwaters of the YadkinRiver. Expect some flooding to be significant with damagingimpacts to roadways and structures. Please seek higher groundimmediately and stay away from flooded roads. Campgroundresidents and visitors are encouraged to seek higher ground untilstreams crest and recede on Wednesday. Extreme caution whiletraveling is advised.

IMPACT…Life threatening flash flooding of creeks and streams,low-lying areas, urban areas, highways, streets andunderpasses. Significant inundation of low-watercrossings, outbuildings, and several secondary roadsis likely. Flooding of crawlspaces and basements ispossible. Culvert and road washouts are possible.Campgrounds may experience significant flooding,capable of sweeping away campers and RVs.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS…
Heavy rain is increasing the risk of landslides, especially in areaswhere slides have occurred in the past. Be especially alert if youare near a stream, especially at the base of a mountain or in acove. Watch for loose-moving soil and rocks or a sudden increase instreamflow. Leave the area quickly if this is observed. When drivingalong roads where the terrain is steep or rocky, watch and listenfor falling rocks, mud, trees and other debris.
In hilly terrain there are hundreds of low water crossings which arepotentially dangerous in heavy rain. Do not attempt to cross floodedroads. Find an alternate route.
Flooding is occurring or is imminent. It is important to know whereyou are relative to streams, rivers, or creeks which can becomekillers in heavy rains. Campers and hikers should avoid streams orcreeks.
