The National Weather Service in Blacksburg has issued a

  • Flash Flood Warning for…Watauga County in northwestern North Carolina…

  • Until midnight EDT.

  • At 713 PM EDT, Doppler radar indicated thunderstorms producingheavy rain across the warned area. Between 1.5 and 3 inches ofrain have fallen over the last 24 hours. The expected rainfallrate between now and 10:00 PM is expected to range from 1.0 to asmuch as 5 inches in 1 hour. Additional rainfall amounts of 2 to 4inches are possible in the warned area…resulting in potentialrainfall totals of 3.5 to 7.0 inches. Flash flooding is expectedto begin shortly.

HAZARD…Flash flooding caused by excessive tropical rainfall.

IMPACT…Flash flooding of small creeks and streams, urbanareas, highways, streets and underpasses as well asother poor drainage and low-lying areas.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS…

Turn around, don't drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flooddeaths occur in vehicles.

In hilly terrain there are hundreds of low water crossings which arepotentially dangerous in heavy rain. Do not attempt to cross floodedroads. Find an alternate route.
