The National Weather Service in Blacksburg has issued a

  • Flash Flood Warning for…Surry County in northwestern North Carolina…Wilkes County in northwestern North Carolina…Yadkin County in northwestern North Carolina…

  • Until 630 PM EDT Thursday.

  • At 1033 AM EDT, Doppler radar indicated heavy rain from TropicalStorm Debby across the warned area. Between 1 and 3 inches of rainhave fallen. The expected rainfall rate is 1 to 2 inches in anhour. Additional rainfall amounts of 2 to 4 inches are possible inthe warned area. Flash flooding is ongoing or expected to beginshortly.

HAZARD…Life threatening flash flooding. Heavy rain producingflash flooding.

IMPACT…Life threatening flash flooding of creeks and streams,urban areas, highways, streets and underpasses.

  • Some locations that will experience flash flooding include…Mount Airy… North Wilkesboro…Elkin… Wilkesboro…Fairview… Flat Rock…Yadkinville…

This includes the following streams and drainages…Archies Creek, Ararat River, Basin Creek and Arnold Branch.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS…

Turn around, don't drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flooddeaths occur in vehicles.

Rainfall of more than five inches in similar storms has beenassociated with an increased risk of landslides and rockslides. Ifyou live on a mountainside or in a cove at the base of a mountain,especially near a stream, be ready to leave in advance of the stormor as quickly as possible should rising water, moving earth, orrocks threaten. Consider postponing travel along mountain roadsduring periods of heavy rainfall.
