2022-09-30T02:00:00-04:002022-09-30T01:45:00-04:00NWS Greenville-Spartanburg (Western North Carolina and Northwest South Carolina)Hurricane Local Statement issued September 29 at 5:35PM EDT by NWS Greenville-SpartanburgThis product covers the western Carolinas and NE Georgia**STRONG GUSTY WINDS AND HEAVY RAIN EXPECTED TO IMPACT PARTS OF THEPIEDMONT OF THE CAROLINAS BEGINNING LATE TONIGHT**NEW INFORMATION—————* CHANGES TO WATCHES AND WARNINGS:– None* CURRENT WATCHES AND WARNINGS:– A Tropical Storm Warning is in effect for Cabarrus, Catawba,Chester, Davie, Gaston, Iredell, Lincoln, Mecklenburg, Rowan,Union NC, and York* STORM INFORMATION:– About 410 miles south of Charlotte NC or about 410 milessouth-southeast of Greenville/Spartanburg SC– 29.3N 79.9W– Storm Intensity 75 mph– Movement North-northeast or 30 degrees at 10 mphSITUATION OVERVIEW——————Tropical Storm Ian is expected to strengthen into a hurricanebefore making landfall again on the South Carolina coast. It willtrack north northwest across the Carolinas, bringing strong winds andheavy rain to the region. Localized flash flooding will be possiblewith the heavy rain, especially across the Piedmont and North Carolinafoothills.POTENTIAL IMPACTS—————–* FLOODING RAIN:Protect against life-threatening rainfall flooding having possibleextensive impacts across the western Carolinas. Potentialimpacts include:– Major rainfall flooding may prompt many evacuations and rescues.– Rivers and tributaries may rapidly overflow their banks inmultiple places. Small streams, creeks, canals, arroyos, andditches may become dangerous rivers. In mountain areas,destructive runoff may run quickly down valleys whileincreasing susceptibility to rockslides and mudslides. Floodcontrol systems and barriers may become stressed.– Flood waters can enter many structures within multiplecommunities, some structures becoming uninhabitable or washedaway. Many places where flood waters may cover escape routes.Streets and parking lots become rivers of moving water withunderpasses submerged. Driving conditions become dangerous.Many road and bridge closures with some weakened or washed out.Protect against dangerous rainfall flooding having possible limitedto significant impacts across all of the western Carolinas, butespecially the Piedmont of North Carolina and eastern Piedmont ofSouth Carolina, including all of the Charlotte metro area, as wellas the northern foothills of North Carolina.* WIND:Protect against dangerous wind having possible significant impactsacross the southern Piedmont of North Carolina, including portionsof the Charlotte metro area. Potential impacts in this areainclude:– Some damage to roofing and siding materials, along with damageto porches, awnings, carports, and sheds. A few buildingsexperiencing window, door, and garage door failures. Mobilehomes damaged, especially if unanchored. Unsecured lightweightobjects become dangerous projectiles.– Several large trees snapped or uprooted, but with greaternumbers in places where trees are shallow rooted. Severalfences and roadway signs blown over.– Some roads impassable from large debris, and more within urbanor heavily wooded places. A few bridges, causeways, and accessroutes impassable.– Scattered power and communications outages, but more prevalentin areas with above ground lines.Also, protect against hazardous wind having possible limited impactsacross the remainder of the western Carolinas and northeast Georgia.* TORNADOES:Little to no impacts are anticipated at this time across the westernCarolinas and northeast Georgia.PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS———————————-* OTHER PREPAREDNESS INFORMATION:Now is the time to complete all preparations to protect life andproperty in accordance with your emergency plan.
