NEWLAND – The Town of Newland Police Department is alerting local businesses about a counterfeit currency incident that occurred this week.

According to police, two individuals passed a counterfeit $100 bill at Highlander's. Multiple neighboring businesses in the area were also victimized. A police report has been filed to document the incident.

The Newland Police Department is asking local business owners and employees to be vigilant when accepting large bills and to contact law enforcement if they encounter suspicious currency.

Hold the bill up to light to check for a watermark and security threadCheck for color-shifting ink on newer billsFeel the texture – genuine currency has a distinct feel due to raised printingCompare the bill to a genuine bill of the same denominationUse a counterfeit detection pen if available
