…ELEVATED FIRE DANGER TODAY…

Dry and windy conditions are expected again today across themountains into the foothills of North Carolina, as well as themountains and Piedmont of Virginia. Relative humidity values willdrop to under 30 percent this afternoon. West to southwest windsof 10 to 20 mph, with gusts of 20 to 35 mph will accompany thisdry airmass. This will result in the continued rapid drying ofleaf litter and other forest fuels.

Residents and visitors are urged to exercise caution if handlingopen flames or equipment that creates sparks. Also, dispose ofcigarette butts, matches, and other flammable items in appropriatecontainers. Keep vehicles off of dry grass and obey local burn bans.Most dry grasses, dead leaves, and other tree litter could easilyignite and spread fire quickly.
